Things to Look For
How Do I Know If I need a Root canal?
The most common symptoms of a root canal is:
- Tooth or gum pain
- A tooth that is tender when it's touched
- A tooth abcess
- Pus drainage in your mouth
Root canal therapy is the best way to eliminate tooth infections and restore your natural tooth. Infections occur when the hard, outer layers of enamel and dentin of your tooth are destroyed, exposing the vulnerable, nerve and blood vessel-filled pulp. This is often caused by tooth decay or an oral injury that results in a cracked tooth. When the pulp is exposed to oral bacteria, it becomes infected and inflamed. Eventually, if the infection is not treated, you’ll have to replace your tooth with a dental implant, denture, or bridge.
How it Works
What Happens During a Root Canal?
The process of a root canal is straightforward and simple, but if you are nervous about the process, we can provide you with sedation to keep you more comfortable. First, Dr. Doan will clean your mouth, numb the treatment area, and remove any damaged or decayed enamel. After the infected pulp is removed, the tooth will be completely disinfected and filled with a rubbery material that provides support for the tooth structure. Finally, a temporary filling or crown will be placed. To complete the root canal procedure, you will come back after a few weeks to receive your permanent dental crown.
How It Will Help
The Benefits of Getting a Root Canal
Getting a root canal will provide you relief from the pain and discomfort of a toothache, which can be truly excruciating. In addition, you will save quite a bit of time and money. Having a root canal is more affordable than extracting and replacing your tooth, which is often required if you do not get treatment. In some cases, root canals are covered by dental insurance plans, so you may not have to pay any out of pocket costs.
What To Expect
Does It Hurt To Get A Root Canal?
No! Today’s root canals are minimally-invasive and can be made virtually painless with the use of local numbing agents. In fact, the process of having a root canal is actually quite similar to having a dental filling placed.
Root canal therapy is the best way to get rid of the pain and discomfort caused by an infected tooth, which can interfere with your day-to-day life. By getting a root canal from Dr. Doan, you can avoid further pain and discomfort.
If you suspect that you have an infected tooth and you are avoiding treatment because you think it may hurt, don’t wait for another second! Root canals at Sea Lotus Dentistry are pain-free, fast, and the best way to save your natural tooth. Get in touch for an emergency appointment right away!
Recovering After A Root Canal
It usually only takes a few days to recover from root canal therapy. You may experience some bruising, swelling and tenderness near the treatment area for 2-3 days. You can continue to eat a normal diet, though you should avoid chewing hard foods on the tender side of your mouth for a few days.
Make sure to maintain proper oral hygiene. You should continue to brush and floss around your treated tooth, but be gentle to avoid discomfort. After a few days, your mouth should feel completely normal.
Once your mouth has healed, you may also need to come back into Sea Lotus Dentistry for a permanent dental crown, which will cover up and protect the affected tooth from further damage.
Follow up with Dr. Doan if you continue to experience pain and discomfort after 3-4 days post-treatment. This could indicate that another session may be required to clean out the tooth and completely eliminate the infection.
How Can I Avoid
Root Canal Therapy?
Proper oral hygiene is the best way to avoid root canal therapy. Make sure to brush at least twice per day for two minutes and floss once per day, and see Dr. Doan for regular six-month teeth cleanings. If you take proper care of your teeth, you are unlikely to ever develop a serious cavity that will require root canal therapy.
In addition, try to get help as soon as you can if you think you have a cavity. As long as the cavity is not deep enough to penetrate your tooth’s hard outer layers of enamel and dentin, it will not require a root canal. You may need a filling or a crown, but you can avoid root canal therapy.
Finally, we recommend wearing a custom-fitted athletic mouthguard if you are participating in contact sports. This is a good way to prevent oral trauma and injuries which could break your tooth and require root canal therapy.
